Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Registration. The program is sold under a single
user license agreement, and may only be installed on a single machine. Registration
must be done from the machine which the program will be used on. Registration can
be done "on-line" (easiest), by e-mail, or by phone. Although a full install
is recommended, the program disc is required in the machine to run the program.
Additional registrations may be arranged at half the cost of a new program.
2. De-registration. We have developed
a de-registration function that will enable you to de-register the program from
the original computer and subsequently install and register the program on another
computer. The de-registration process
needs to be done before any of the following:
1. transferring the program to another computer;
2. if you are formatting your hard drive;
3. replacing your existing hard drive or
4. upgrading or buying a new computer.
To check the version of Roberts', run the program, click [Help] on
the menu bar and select "About" OR check your discs. You will have version 3, version 3.1 or
version 3.2.
Version 3
If you have version 3, you will first need to update to Version
3.2 before you can de-register. Download
Update 6 file to your
original computer (make a note of where it is being saved). Once it is downloaded,
locate it using Windows Explorer or My Computer and double click on the file to
install it.
Once updated, run the program and click [Help] on the top menu bar
(next to the back & forward arrows). Select [De-Register]. You can de-register
Online or by Telephone. Contact the support team on 031-2665948 before de-registering
by telephone. If you wish to de-register online, log onto the Internet, when logged
on click De-register Online. Once this is done, you will be able to register the
program on your new computer.
Version 3.1
If you have version 3.1, you can de-register online, but if you want to de-register
by telephone, you will first need to update to Version 3.2.
Download Update
5 to 6 file to your original computer (make a note
of where it is being saved). Once it is downloaded, locate it using Windows Explorer
or My Computer and double click on the file to install it.
Run the program and click [Help] on the top menu bar (next to the back & forward
arrows). Select [De-register]. You can de-register Online or by Telephone (if updated
to 3.2). Contact the support team on 031-2665948 before
de-registering by telephone. If you wish to de-register online, log onto the Internet,
when logged on click [De-register Online]. Once this is done, you will be able to
register the program on your new computer.
Version 3.2
If you have version 3.2, you do not need to update
to de-register.
Run the program and click [Help] on the top menu bar (next to the back & forward
arrows). Select [De-register]. You can de-register Online or by Telephone. Contact
the support team on 031-2665948 before de-registering by telephone. If you wish
to de-register online, log onto the Internet, when logged on click [De-register
Online]. Once this is done, you will be able to register the program on your new
computer.
3. Bird Games. The bird games have been developed
into a separate product "Roberts' Bird Games",
which was published in 2000. These games are far more advanced and enjoyable than
those in earlier versions, and include 16 habitat scenes with random birds that
you find and identify. By comparison, Roberts' Multimedia Version 3 is a
comprehensive multimedia reference work, and does not include games.
4. Roberts 7. Publication of the long-awaited Roberts'
7 (the book on which the cd-rom is based) has been further delayed and is only anticipated
for mid 2004. Upgrading of Roberts' Multimedia to the new text is expected to follow
by the end of 2004. However, the Roberts' Multimedia is far more than an electronic
book, with most functions being quite independent of the text. The existing Roberts'
6 text is a more than adequate background to the multimedia functions, and has been
updated for all the new species. In this respect, the Roberts' Multimedia is already
'ahead' of the species accepted for Roberts' 7, which requires the actual publication
of scientific papers for new species before they are included..
5. Importing Version 2 lists. Version 3 will import
version 2 lists with all the field data including individual user notes entered
on bird pages. Version 3 will install to a new directory, and will not overwrite
the version 2 data. Once you have installed, you can navigate to the Bird Lists
- Personal Bird Lists module, and select In/Out - Import V2 lists and then
Import V2 notes.
6. Bird List Hierarchy. You can create your own bird
list hierarchy. This is useful if you wish to create Southern Africa
as a region under your World life list, without records from the rest
of the world reporting to your Southern Africa life list. E-mail support@sabirding.co.za for full instructions.
7. Bird List number of records. To aid slower machines,
the program automatically limits the number of records it "carries" to
1000 records. If your life list suddenly stops below bird number 887, then you need
to allow more records. Go to Setup, Configuration, General, and set the "maximum
number of records to display" to say 10,000.
8. Backing up bird list data. The bird list data
is saved to your personal Microsoft Access database file under C:\Program Files\RobertsMM3\UserData.
Copy this folder and save to another drive or disc.
9. Printing Birding Spot List. Open the birding spot module
and select the birding spot you want to view. Once you click the birding spot name
in the hierarchy, the list on the left will be filtered for that spot. Click [Modules]
and select Bird Lists - Source Lists. A "Select Bird List" window will
pop-up, click [Retain Filtered List]. The birding spot list will now appear in the
Source List module. Click [Edit View] and design the print layout for the birding
spot list. Then click [Print].
10. Sound Settings. You can toggle background sounds
on and off, or switch them off completely.
- Switch off background sounds completely. On the menu bar click [Setup]. Select "Configuration" and
then click on "Multimedia". Under Sounds, make sure that "Play Habitat
Background Sound" is not ticked. Then click [OK].
- Switch off background sounds with toggle. On the menu bar click
[Setup]. Select "Configuration" and then click on "Multimedia".
Under Sounds, make sure that "Play Habitat Background Sound" is ticked.
Under "Apply Sound Toggle To", select Habitat Background Sound. Then click
[OK]. Click the speaker icon in the top right corner of the menu bar to toggle the
background sounds on and off.
