Book: Roberts Bird Guide
Over 950 species, 455 pages, 166 colour plates. Size 215x145x30mm, with soft plastic
cover. This new field guide
includes a number of new and innovative features. The plate illustrations
are larger and liberally annotated with identification features. The text is longer
and more detailed than the average field guide, and includes size and weight, descriptions
of sexes, juveniles, habitat, call, food and breeding. Also indicated are Endemic
and Red Data species. Names include the new English and Scientific names, together
with the Afrikaans name and alternative English name. The distribution maps are
colour-coded to show resident, breeding migrant, non-breeding migrant and rare species,
and the density of colour indicates relative abundance of uncommon, common and abundant.
A breeding bar indicates the range and peak of breeding. Other features include;
an illustrated and alphabetical quick index at the front, a checklist-index at the
back, a list of endemic species, plate illustrations of nightjar flight patterns
and warbler wing patterns, a 43-page Etymology (meaning of scientific names), colloquial
names indexed in 13 languages, a glossary, and an illustrated glossary (parts of
a bird). All in all an excellent field guide for beginner to experienced birder.
