Gorongosa NP
Gorongosa National Park
Previously one of the great game parks of Africa, numbers of game animals are now much reduced, and currently the main attraction of the park are the spectacular concentrations of waterbirds on the Urema
River Floodplain. A day is sufficient to take in the accessible part of the floodplain, but at least another is needed to explore the woodlands. More than 220 species have been recorded here and a day trip may net over 100.
Specials African Skimmer, Long-toed Lapwing, Greater Painted-snipe, Collared Pratincole (thousands), Grey Crowned Crane, Great White Pelican, Pink-backed Pelican, Black-and-white Flycatcher, Moustached Grass-Warbler,
Collared Palm-Thrush, Palm-nut Vulture, Mascarene Martin, Lemon-breasted Canary.
Habitats Palm woodlands, miombo woodlands, marshland and lakes.
Facilities A campsite with hot and cold running water is available.
Birding A map detailing the current road network is available at the campsite. The best routes to take vary according to which areas are flooded at the time. Generally one should drive towards the floodplain, then park and walk when you are near the water.
General The turnoff to the reserve and Chitengo
Camp is well signposted on the road from Inchope to Gorongosa (on the right). The camp is 32 km from the turnoff on a good dirt road. Most of the roads into the reserve are closed to vehicles during the peak of the rainy season, but the campsite is still accessible. Visitors intending to proceed to Gorongosa
Mountain can get advice and assistance from the staff here.
