Moletzie Nature Reserve This small 204 ha reserve was proclaimed to protect the Cape Vulture colony nesting on one of the rocky outcrops, as well as the northernmost breeding colony of the Southern Bald Ibis. The reserve is dominated by a couple of rock outcrops as well as acacia savanna and grassland. There are a couple of footpaths that crisscross the reserve and which cover most habitat types. A small entrance fee is payable and there are picnic and braai facilities. There is also a Vulture Restaurant where the vultures are fed from time to time. Allow three to four hours for birding.
Birding The reserve is 35km from Pietersburg on the R521 north. Turn left at the Seshego turn-off and continue to Seshego. Once in Seshego, take the Steilloopbrug/Gilead road. The reserve is about 27km from the centre of Pietersburg. A large, dome shaped, whitewashed rock outcrop is a useful landmark at the turn-off to the reserve. Derek Engelbrecht 1997. |
