Plettenberg Bay

This includes the estuary of the Keurbooms River and tidal lagoon, the Bitou River and floodplain and Robberg Nature Reserve.

Specials
Knysna Warbler, Victorin's Warbler, Orange-breasted Sunbird, Baillon's Crake and African Crowned Eagle (up the Keurbooms River).

Habitats

Tidal mudflats, forest, fynbos, rock formations, cliffs and caves, beaches, lagoon, rivers , pastures and dams.

Facilities
Hotels, country lodges, chalets, Bed and Breakfast, picnic sites, hiking trails, adventure companies and camping.

Birding

1. The Keurbooms River Estuary in summer includes a few Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Whimbrel, Grey Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Little Stint, Curlew Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Purple Heron, African Fish-Eagle, Osprey, Caspian Tern and Swift Tern.

2. The floodplain on the Bietou River, when flooded, includes Pied Avocet, African Spoonbill, South African Shelduck, Hottentot Teal, Red-billed Teal, Ruff, Wood Sandpiper, Little Stint, African Rail, Baillon's Crake, Whiskered Tern and African Marsh-Harrier.

Plettenberg Bay =============== 1. Rietvlei Turn North off N2 at Pennypinchers building supplies. Reasonable views over the vlei (C Teal, Yellow billed Duck, Night Heron usually) and paserines in reeds and bushes. Continue past vlei to marshy area on left and polo fields on right. Resident Black shouldered kite and passerines and blue cranes on bitou river edge, and manager sympathetic to birders. Excellent bird viwsd from Restuarant, Emily's Moon" up hill at end of this road. 2. Access to North bank of lower Keurbooms river. Turn south off N2 opposite Pennypinchers building supply shop, and take dirt road about 600m to small aprking area, popular with fishermen. Walk through to swamp and river edge. Try and avoid high tide! 3. Access to Upper REaches of Keurbooms river Knysna tourac (Lourie) very easy to see here. a. Cross bridge going East and turn down to grassy area. Path runs short way up gorge. b. Hire canoe here and paddle up c. Hire motor-boat at West side of bridge d. Go into Avontuur camp-site / holiday park (will be charged day entry). K Louries often in trees there. Can also also hire m-boat here.
